Plasma Grow-Lights

The UV420 UV grow-light, delivers UV-B (280-315 nm), UV-A (315-400 nm) and blue (400-495 nm) to complement normal PAR grow-lights:

  • Economically tailored to suit crops and growth cycles
Ceravision's UV420 grow-light outputs UVB and UVA to boost CBD in medicinal cannabis crops.

UV-B, UV-A and Blue Light Boost Crop Quality and Value

Plants have evolved to exploit sunlight's spectrum to power photosynthesis for growth and regulate development. Crops utilise solar UV-B in their native habitats and are subject to varying amounts of UV depending on their latitude and altitude. Research shows that UV-B is vital and that crops grown outside have greater nutritional values than those grown inside.

Trials at the Bridge Farm Group on industrial hemp and salads boosted oils, colour and flavour - see Andrew Fuller, Bridge Farm's Technical Director interviewed by Shane Torpey here.

The solar spectrum includes the damaging UV-C range but fortunately for us all this is blocked by ozone in the earth's atmosphere.

UV-A and UV-B in sunlight activate a plant's natural defence mechanisms, producing proteins that act as a protective sunscreen plant. These influence photomorphogenic responses - gene regulation, flavonoid biosynthesis, leaf and epidermal cell expansion, stomatal density, stress and increased photosynthetic efficiency. This synthesis of proteins improves disease resistance, colour, fragrance, taste and potency. The more UV exposure, the more such proteins are produced.

When a plant detects UV-B at 288 nm, it produces the UVR8 protein. This protein acts as a chemical messenger that signals to the plant to secrete more oils and resins to help

protect the plant and its seeds from potentially harmful UV-B. The result is that the UV-B boosts the production of flavonoids and terpenes - powerful compounds that dictate the flavour, aroma and colour.

Greenhouse crops do not benefit from solar UV-B as it is all blocked by glass; normal assimilation lighting provide lots of PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation) in the region 400 to 700 nm, but little if any UV-B and limited UV-A.

Appplied post-harvest, UV-B continues to boost secondary metabolites to protect and enhance the crop and prolong shelf-life. In strawberries for example, UV-B deters the growth of powdery mildew and prolongs freshness. UV-B also helps sterilise surfaces between crops by removing bugs and pathogens (eg mould and powdery mildew) to create a cleaner grow-room.

The UV420 is a perfect complementary grow-light and will add real value to your indoor crop cultivation.
